2026 New Year’s Resolutions: Choosing Real Materials, Designing for Life, and Moving Beyond Greenwashing

Sustainable Luxury Accessories: Why Material Choice Matters

The start of a new year always brings reflection.

We think more carefully about what we buy, how often we replace things, and whether our choices genuinely align with our values. Sustainability, functionality and longevity are no longer “nice to haves” they are customer expectations.

At Barkworth Reeve, our New Year’s resolution isn’t about reinventing ourselves overnight. It’s about doubling down on what we already do and believe in: designing functional accessories that work hard, exceed expectations, last well, and are made using materials that make sense, both practically and environmentally.

Honest Sustainability in Fashion: Transparency Has to Come First

“Sustainable fashion” has become a heavily over used phrase, often loosely applied and sometimes misleadingly. As a small, founder-led British accessories brand, we believe the most responsible, and ethical thing we can do is be open, specific and honest about our choices, they 'why' behind those choices including the limitations.

We don’t claim to be perfect. We do commit to continual improvement, asking questions of our manufacturers and delivering transparency; designing products that earn a place in your wardrobe for the long term.

Real Leather vs PU and Vegan Leather: Our Material Philosophy

One of the clearest decisions we’ve made at Barkworth Reeve is to use high-quality, responsibly sourced real leather, rather than PU or so-called “vegan leather”.  I get so angry when I see the phrase "Vegan Leather" being  thrown around.  Instead lets call it what it is, Polyurethane an oil-based plastic.... doesn't sound quite as appealing does it?

PU (polyurethane) is often marketed as an environmentally friendly alternative, the reality is more complex. PU materials are derived from fossil fuels, are difficult to recycle, and tend to break down quickly, cracking, peeling and degrading within a relatively short period of use.

In many cases, this leads to more frequent replacement, and ultimately its more plastic waste.

Marketing plastic-based materials as “green” because they are animal-free smacks of greenwashing, particularly when durability and end-of-life impact are not properly considered, and very rarely spoken about.

Responsibly Sourced Leather: A Durable, Repairable, Long-Term Choice

The leather we use is sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG)–certified tanneries, audited for environmental standards, water usage, chemical management and traceability.

Leather is a natural by-product of the food industry. When used thoughtfully and and cared for correctly it is:

  • Exceptionally long-lasting

  • Repairable and maintainable

  • Naturally ageing rather than degrading developing a beautiful and unique patina

  • Used for decades rather than seasons

A well-made leather handbag that lasts 10–20 years has a very different environmental footprint to a synthetic alternative that gets replaced every few seaons.

Slow fashion led by logic, not hysterical trends.

Functional Bag Design and Sustainability: Why Use Matters

Sustainability doesn’t end with material choice, it lives within the design.

At Barkworth Reeve, we design bags to be used often. When a bag is beautiful and genuinely functional, i.e. comfortable to carry, secure, intuitive and adaptable, it becomes a default 'go to'. And your beloved, fail safe default items don’t get discarded.

Our designs prioritise:

  • Practical compartments and accessibility

  • Secure closure's, strong straps and solid hardware

  • Timeless silhouettes that don’t date
  • Multi-use functionality for your daily life

Longevity is one of the most effective, and most overlooked sustainability tools in fashion.

A British Accessories Brand Committed to Thoughtful Progress

As a small, independent British brand, we take a measured, responsible approach.

Barkworth Reeve is about refinement and restraint, doing fewer things better. Going forward, we are focused on:

  • Continuing to use durable, high-quality materials with clear provenance

  • Refining designs so each piece does more with less

  • Improving our packaging, ensuring our choices can be recycled where possible

  • Working closely with long-term suppliers to reduce waste

  • Avoiding fast fixes or empty environmental claims

Progress matters more to us than perfection.

FAQs: Leather, Sustainability & Responsible Materials

Is real leather sustainable?
When sourced responsibly, leather can be a sustainable material. It is a by-product of the food industry and, when tanned to high environmental standards, offers exceptional durability, repairability and longevity. A well-made leather bag used for decades reduces the need for frequent replacement and waste.

How long should a high-quality leather bag last?
With proper care, a well-made leather bag should last 10–20 years or more. Leather improves with age, developing character rather than degrading. This longevity is a key reason we choose leather over synthetic alternatives.

What does Leather Working Group (LWG) certified mean?
LWG certification indicates that a tannery has been audited for environmental responsibility, including water usage, chemical management, energy efficiency and traceability. We work with LWG-certified tanneries to ensure our leather meets high environmental and quality standards
